UN turns to Google to make its global data ready for AI agents

The UN and Google are launching the UN System Data Commons, a new platform that makes the UN's global statistics easier for AI systems to search and use.
The platform replaces the old UNData portal and supports the Model Context Protocol, a standard that lets AI systems connect directly to data sources. A UNICEF test showed that large language models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google achieved only 21.2 percent accuracy when retrieving development indicators — three out of five responses did not provide a usable number at all. Google.org contributed $2 million, and the UN aims to get 80 percent of its statistical material on the platform by 2027.
