Why I built it
Choosing where to live is one of the biggest decisions we make, but the information needed to make that decision is scattered across many different sources. I wanted to bring it together and make it useful. Boendeindex lets people compare all 290 Swedish municipalities based on factors such as housing costs, jobs, safety, schools, commuting and quality of life and weigh them according to their own priorities.
How it's built
I combined large amounts of Swedish public data from multiple official sources and built a model for comparing all 290 municipalities. I then developed different scenarios around real-life questions such as where the jobs are, where you can afford a house, where everyday life is safer, and where commuting can make financial sense. AI-assisted development helped me turn the data, methodology and ideas into a working web service.
The hardest part
The hardest part was not building the website,it was making very different types of data comparable without oversimplifying them. Defining the methodology, weighting the indicators and checking the underlying data took the most time. The goal was to keep the model transparent while still making the results simple enough to be useful.
Up next
Boendeindex is now live with pages for all 290 Swedish municipalities. The next step is to improve the data and models, add new ways of exploring where to live, and learn from how people actually use the service. The long-term ambition is to make Boendeindex a useful independent tool for anyone considering where in Sweden to live, work or move.
