The story behind FootSam
Why I built it
I've always enjoyed nerding out about football and statistics, but I felt a lot of the information was scattered across different sites. I wanted to bring matches, players, clubs, stadiums, referees, history and statistics together in one place, while also making it possible to find connections and things you might not have thought of before.
How it's built
I actually started quite simply and have built on it bit by bit. I mainly use Codex and Claude Code and have learned a huge amount along the way. Much of it has been trying an idea, seeing how it works in practice and then improving it. FootSam has grown quite a lot from the original idea 😅
The hardest part
The data, without a doubt. Showing football statistics is one thing; getting players, clubs, matches, stadiums and history to fit together correctly is something else entirely. The bigger FootSam has become, the more time has gone into making everything fast, stable and, above all, accurate.
Up next
I honestly have far too many ideas 😅 Right now, I'm continuing to expand FootSam with more history, better live features, more ways to discover statistics and more features around players, clubs, stadiums and referees. The goal is for FootSam to be a place where you always find something new to nerd out about. ⚽
