Grannepark — rent a parking space from a neighbour

Neighbours rent out their parking spaces by the hour when they're empty. Cheaper than street parking, with payments made directly between neighbours via Swish.

The story behind Grannepark — rent a parking space from a neighbour

Why I built it

In the housing association where I live, many parking spaces sit empty from eight to five, while street parking around the corner costs up to SEK 40 an hour plus parking app fees. Meanwhile, heating, water, waste collection and interest costs are rising for every association, and the only income is the monthly fee. Parking can provide extra income without putting more of a burden on members. Grannepark lets associations and individuals rent out their spaces during the hours they're empty anyway. Drivers pay less, and the owners receive the money directly via Swish.

How it's built

All of Grannepark was built together with Claude Code: Next.js, Supabase, Mapbox, Vercel and Resend. I described what I wanted, we discussed how it should work, and Claude wrote the code. What worked best was writing a short spec before each new part and having Claude review its own work afterwards, preferably with several reviewers working in parallel. The pricing engine is a good example: it knows Uppsala's parking zones, fetches the municipal rates and automatically sets the price fifteen per cent lower according to the time of day. Every figure is verified against the municipality's own website.

The hardest part

Getting people to find it without a single krona in the marketing budget, and of course the chicken-and-egg problem. A marketplace is empty until supply and demand exist in the same neighbourhood, and nobody searches for a service they don't know exists. What we do instead of advertising: basic SEO, a demand map where people mark where they want to park so we can contact them when a space becomes available, and small flyers with QR codes so people who want to rent out a space can do their own marketing. It's slow, but every user so far has come through those channels.

Up next

The site went live in June, and the first actual person renting out a space joined in August. The next step is density: more spaces and more map markers in the same neighbourhood. In the longer term, I want housing associations to be able to rent out their spaces collectively and gain a real revenue stream alongside the monthly fee. There are hundreds of thousands of parking spaces that sit empty during the day in Sweden. If a fraction of them are rented out, a noticeable share of parking money shifts from companies' markups to neighbours and associations.
