The story behind Semestermaxaren — get more from your time off
Why I built it
I couldn't find a simple Swedish tool showing how public holidays, bridge days, school holidays and your own plans can help you get longer stretches of time off. Many people also have work schedules that don't follow a normal working week, so I wanted the planning to take imported or manually entered schedules into account.
How it's built
The frontend uses React, TypeScript, Vite and Tailwind. The backend uses Node.js and Express, hosted on my own VPS behind Nginx with HTTPS and systemd. Plans and work schedules are processed locally in the browser; schedules can be imported from CSV, Excel and iCal/Outlook or entered manually. I've used ChatGPT/Codex for development support.
The hardest part
Making the calculations understandable without pretending everyone has the same working hours or leave arrangements. That's why schedule support, manual review and clear limitations are important parts of the solution.
Up next
I want to test with more users and improve the mobile experience, schedule imports from more systems and the explanations around different leave situations. I'm particularly looking for feedback on clarity, mobile workflows and how well work schedule imports work.
